WICHITA, Kan.- The Missouri Valley Conference named senior Matheus Pereira the men's tennis athlete of the week today.
The team captain, Pereira helped the Shockers in their 5-2 victory over Air Force by defeating No. 85 Lance Wilhelm, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, at the No. 1 singles position. In doubles competition, Pereira and his partner Tin Ostojic defeated Alex Grubbs and Jack McCullers of Air Force, 8-2, to help Wichita State capture the doubles point in the match.
Pereira continued his great week in Wichita State's 4-2 win over No. 53 Denver. In singles play, he defeated Jens Vorkefeld in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 1 position. In doubles play, he and Ostojic defeated Henry Craig and Fabio Biasion, 8-6.
He is now 11-6 in singles matches on the season, including 5-2 in dual matches. Pereira has also won seven out of his last ten singles matches. In doubles competition, he leads the Shockers with a combined record of 17-5. Pereira and Ostojic have also won seven straight doubles matches.
The Shocker men continue their season on Friday, March 1 against Washburn. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
