LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State scored the go ahead run in the fifth inning to win 5-4 over Wichita State in the finale of a three-game series.
Joe Haddox went 1-for-2 with two RBI, while Tyler Baker and
Johnny Coy each drove in a run. Cody Bobbit went 2-for-3 with two walks.
Starter A.J. Ladwig took the loss. He went four innings and gave up five runs on eight hits.
Cody Bobbit led off the game with a single to left field and after stealing second base, he scored on a two-out single from Johnny Coy to give the Shocks a 1-0 lead.
The Dirtbags answered in the bottom of the first. Jeff McNeil led off with a single and after a sacrifice bunt moved him to second base, Jeff Yamaguchi doubled down the right field line to tie the score at one. Yamaguchi moved to third base on a wild pitch, but the Shockers got him in a run down on a ground ball to throw him out at home. The Dirtbags took a 2-1 lead after a double by Richard Prigatano.
Long Beach State used three hits in the second inning to score two more runs for a 4-1 lead, but the Shockers answered with two runs in the third. With runners on first and second and two outs, Erik Harbutz drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases and Joe Haddox singled up the middle to drive in two to cut the lead to 4-3.
WSU tied the game in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Tyler Baker singled to right field to drive in Bobbit to tie the score at four.
LBSU retook the lead with a run in the fifth for the final score of 5-4.
The Shockers are next in action on Wed., March 20 at Hawaii at 11:35 p.m. Central time.
