WICHITA, Kan. – Following a midweek matchup with top-ranked Oklahoma, Wichita State returns to conference play Friday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Evansville.
The three-game series with the Purple Aces will be a pivotal contest for both teams looking to make their way up the conference ladder. Wichita State was picked eighth in the MVC preseason poll followed in ninth by Evansville.
What Happened Last Time?
In their last meeting the Shockers earned their only conference sweep of the 2012 season bringing down the Purple Aces three straight times at Cooper Stadium Apr. 14-15 in Evansville, Ind. The Shockers sandwiched a pair of 1-0 victories around a 7-1 victory in the series’ second game. Wichita State’s highlight of the season came in game one with Sloan Anderson entering in relief in the bottom of the seventh with one out and the bases loaded. Anderson got a strikeout and a lineout to left field to preserve the 1-0 victory propelling the Shockers to the three-game sweep.
Wichita State freshman outfielder Brittany Fortner will play against her older sister Kayla, a sophomore outfielder at Evansville for the first team as MVC rivals.
Late Game Heroics
Laura Vickers walk-off double against Indiana State on March 16th was Wichita State’s first win in a game in which they trailed after six innings under head coach Kristi Bredbenner (37 games).
Wichita State leads the Missouri Valley Conference with 45 doubles. The 45 doubles account for 27-percent of the Shockers 164 hits this season. The next highest doubles percentage in The Valley is UNI at 21-percent (36/172).
