WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State Baseball Team dropped the first game of a two game series with No. 22 Arizona State by a score of 4-3. ASU improved to 16-8-1 on the year, while the Shockers moved to 16-13. Albert Minnis picked up the loss to even his record at 3-3.
Minnis pitched three innings, allowing one run on four hits and struck out three. His ERA now stands at 3.38.
Alex Blackford picked up the win for the visiting Sun Devils to improve to 3-0 on the season. Ryan Burr secured his sixth save of the season.
The Sun Devils jumped out to an early lead in the first inning on Shocker starter, Drew Palmer. With the bases loaded, Trever Allen singled home Kasey Coffman.
A fielding error on the play allowed James McDonald to score giving Arizona a 2-0 lead.
The Shockers bounced back in the third inning. Garrett Bayliff singled to right before Casey Gillaspie smacked a double that drove in Bayliff. Two batters later, Tyler Baker knocked in Gillaspie with a single to tie the game at 2-2.
Arizona State broke the tie an inning later. Coffman doubled down the right field line, plating David Graybill and the Sun Devils took a 3-2 lead.
The Shockers knotted it again in the sixth. Cody Bobbit bounced an RBI single through the left side that scored Mikel Mucha to make it a 3-3 game.
R.J, Ybarra broke the tie in the ninth with single up the middle. Max Rossiter came around to score the eventual winning run.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Shockers advanced the tying run to third with two outs, but Burr got Micah Green to pop out to end the end the game.
The Shockers and Sun Devils continue their two game mid-week series on Wednesday at Eck Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
