BSB: Coy and Gillaspie Lead Shockers to 11-3 Win

WICHITA, Kan. – Johnny Coy blasted a three run homerun over the centerfield wall in the sixth inning to lead the Shocker hitting attack to an 11-3 win in game two of the three game series with Indiana State. Wichita State (18-14) tallied 13 hits for the game, Coy was 2-for-5 with three RBI and Casey Gillaspie went 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Shockers.

Indiana State (12-13) got the scoring started early in the first inning. A leadoff walk from Landon Curry led to an RBI single from Robby Ort to give Indians State a 1-0 lead. Back-to-back singles from Koby Kraemer and Owen Conway was followed by an RBI single from Jacob Hayes and the Sycamores increased their lead to 2-0.

Cody Bobbit and Garrett Bayliff singled to start the bottom half of the first inning for the Shockers. Gillaspie doubled down the left field line that scored Bobbit. Bayliff would score on the play after a fielding error from the Sycamore left fielder and the Shockers tied the game 2-2. Tyler Baker singled to center that scored Gillaspie from second and Mikel Mucha doubled to deep right field that scored Baker from first and the Shockers owned a 4-2 lead after one inning.

In the third inning, the Shockers tallied another run after Gillaspie and Coy both singled and advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Baker then earned his second RBI of the game after a ground out to second scored Gillaspie to give Wichita State a 5-2 lead.

The Sycamores got a run back in the fifth inning. Ort reached on a fielding error and Kraemer singled before Hayes drove in Ort for his second RBI of the game. Wichita State answered back after Mucha singled to right that scored Erik Harbutz as the Shockers led 6-3 after five innings.

Coy highlighted the four run sixth inning with a three run homerun over the centerfield wall. Bobbit and Bayliff each drew two-out walks before Gillaspie smacked a ground rule double to center that scored Bobbit. Coy then came to the plate and belted his second homerun of the season to give the Shockers a 10-3 lead.

The Shockers scored another run in the seventh after Taylor Doggett led off the inning with a double down the left field line and later scored on a fielding error to give the Shockers a comfortable 11-3 cushion.

T.J. McGreevy earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. McGreevy pitched two innings, allowing one run on four hits and struck out two.

The Shockers will go for the sweep in the three game home series with Indiana State, tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
