EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The Wichita State women’s tennis team defeated Evansville 7-0 on Saturday at Wesselman Park to remain undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference Play heading into their final match against Southern Illinois on Sunday.
In doubles play, Rebecca Pedrazzi and Carla Venticinque defeated Emily Richardson and Kelsey Costales, 8-1 and Montse Blasco Fernandez and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul defeated Gaby Fifer and Marina Moreno, 8-2 to give the Shockers the doubles point. Both duos remain undefeated in conference doubles play.
Freshman Julia Schiller also remained unbeaten in conference play with a victory in singles play over Marketa Trousilova, 7-6, 6-4. Schiller is 11-5 on the season and has now won five consecutive matches. Blasco Fernandez, a junior from Tarragona, Spain, grabbed her 20th singles victory of the season, defeating Mina Milovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Mahajaroenkul also grabbed an impressive win in singles play, blanking Emily Richardson, 6-0, 6-0, to move her record to 15-12 on the season and 5-1 in conference play. Rebecca Pedrazzi, Lucia Kovalova and Carla Venticinque all won in the singles competition as well.
The Shocker win and the Southern Illinois win over Creighton on Saturday means the two teams will battle it out on Sunday for the regular season MVC title as both head into the finale undefeated. Wichita State will be looking for their fifth consecutive regular season championship. The match begins at 10 a.m. in Carbondale, Ill.
