WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State women’s tennis team gathered a total of eight MVC All-Conference awards on Thursday night at the awards banquet leading up to the MVC Team Championships Wichita State hosts this weekend.

Freshman Julia Schiller took home the All-Conference award at No. 2 singles, going a perfect 7-0 during MVC play. Joining the Shockers in January, Schiller compiled a record of 12-5 in singles competition. She goes into postseason play with a six-match winning streak and she has also won seven out of her last ten matches.

After being named 2012 MVC Freshman of the Year, Lucia Kovalova went 5-2 in conference play to earn the All-Conference award at No. 3 singles for the second straight season. Carla Venticinque also captured the No. 6 singles honor for the second straight year, going a perfect 5-0 in conference regular season play.

After not taking home awards at any doubles position for the 2011-12 season, the Shockers gathered two on Thursday night. Carla Venticinque and Rebecca Pedrazzi won for No. 2 doubles while Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul and Montse Blasco Fernandez gathered the All-Conference award at No. 3 doubles. Venticinque and Pedrazzi went a perfect 6-0 in doubles conference play and have gathered a record of 16-7 for the season. Mahajaroenkul and Blasco Fernandez also went undefeated in MVC play with a mark of 5-0.

Pedrazzi, with a record of 5-1 in MVC play, captured the MVC Freshman of the Year award. It was the third straight year the Shockers have captured the honor and fourth in the last five years.

Veronika Blaskova, along with Blasco Fernandez were also named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team on Thursday evening for their efforts in the classroom.

After capturing their fifth consecutive regular season MVC Championship, the Shockers will begin their quest for their fifth straight tournament championship when they play their first round match against eight-seeded Bradley on Friday at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
