FAYETTEVILLE, Ark- Austin Bahner ran, threw, and jumped his way to the second best decathlon score in school history. The Wichita native scored 7,449 points at the Arkansas Team Invitational to move into 12th place nationally.
An NCAA Second-Team All-American during the indoor season, Bahner’s score will likely qualify him for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The junior’s performance ranks atop the Missouri Valley Conference. He leads his closest competition by 50 points.
Bahner won the MVC Heptathlon Championship during the indoor season. If he can claim victory in the decathlon at conference, he would be the first Shocker ever to sweep both multi championships.
The meet at Arkansas began with the men’s 100m dash. Bahner ran a season best of 10.92 to pick up 825 points. In his second event. the long jump, Bahner (7.02m) posted the fifth best mark in the Valley this season.
Bahner wrapped up day one with respectable numbers in the shot put (14.85m) , the high jump (1.87m), and the 400m dash (49.76).
The Wichita native started day two with a personal best of 15.57 in the 110m hurdles. This PR added 639 points to Bahner’s score.
Bahner topped all other decathletes in the discus throw. The junior launched a mark of (45.65m) to pick up 780 points.
The junior added 760 points in the pole vault (4.50m) and 618 points in the javelin (51.63m). He finished his decathlon with a time of 4:46.70 in the 1,500m scoring 639 more points.
Bahner and the rest of the Wichita State Track & Field team will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the MVC Outdoor Championships May 10-12. Keep up with the Shockers on their road to conference by watching Shocker Track Weekly.
