WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State used four hits from Mikel Mucha and four RBI from Tanner Dearman to defeat Kansas Wesleyan 12-1 on Wednesday night at Eck Stadium.
Starter Kris Gardner pitched five shutout innings with three strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.
Mucha went 4-for-5 with two RBI, while Dearman went 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Tanner Dearman led off the bottom of the first on second base after an error by the Coyotes. He moved to third on a flyout from Garrett Bayliff and scored on a groundout from Tyler Baker to take a 1-0 lead.
WSU used four hits and a Coyote error to add four more runs in the second for a 5-0 lead.
Johnny Coy led off the third with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Sean Moore. Mikel Mucha drove in Coy with a single and scored on a double from Joe Haddox to give the Shocks a 7-0 lead.
Taylor Doggett, Mucha and Dearman all singled in the fifth to score three more runs for a 10-0 lead.
The Coyotes got on the board in the seventh inning. Kyle Story and Chad Zuniga led off with singles and advanced to second and third on a groundout. Pinch runner Luke Curry scored on a grounout from Jordan Dee to cut the lead to 10-1.
The Shockers tacked on two more in the seventh courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Parker Zimmerman and an RBI single from Dearman for a 12-1 lead.
The Shockers are next in action on May 3 when they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State at 6:30 p.m.
