WICHITA, Kan.- Freshman Garrett Brummett pitched six innings, allowed one run on four hits and struck out three to lead the Shockers past Creighton 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Brummett’s victory moves his record to 3-0 on the season. Dayne Parker went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Casey Gillaspie went 2-for-4 and Mikel Mucha went 1-for-3 with a triple. Brandon Peterson pitched a scoreless 2.1 innings for his ninth save of the season.
Austin Groth took the loss for the Bluejays going 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on nine hits. Brennan Murphy went 1-for-3 at the plate and had the only Bluejay RBI.
Creighton was the first team on the board. Reagan Fowler doubled to lead off the second inning, then moved to third on a single by Kevin Lamb, and scored on Brennan Murphy's sacrifice fly to left field.
With two outs in the fourth, the Shockers scored three runs to take the lead. Erik Harbutz doubled and scored on a Parker single. Mucha then tripled down the right field line to plate Parker and scored in the next at-bat on a wild pitch by Groth.
Tanner Dearman led off the fifth inning with a single, then stole second and moved to third on a flyout by Garrett Bayliff. Tyler Baker plated Dearman with a single to right field to put Wichita State up 4-1.
The Shockers were able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh to keep their lead at 4-1.
Wichita State will welcome Oklahoma State to Eck Stadium on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game can be seen on Kansas 22.
