CHULA VISTA, Calif.- Wichita State Track and Field student-athlete Austin Bahner, competing for Team USA in the Thorpe Cup, sits in ninth place in the decathlon after day one was completed on Saturday.
Bahner scored 4,003 points on Saturday and is only 201 points behind leader Rene Stauss of Germany. He was able to lead all competitors in the long jump, posting a jump of 25-1 ½. Bahner also performed well in 100m (10.87) and 400m (49.70) runs, scoring 890 and 828 points respectively.
The Thorpe Cup will finish up on Sunday, as the athletes will compete in the final five events, starting with the 110m hurdles at 11 a.m.
About the Thorpe Cup: The Thorpe Cup is an international track and field competition between USA and Germany. Teams are made up of up to seven men and seven women who compete in decathlon and heptathlon. Athletes received a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events in the decathlon and heptathlon. The top five men’s and top three women’s scores are added together to determine the overall men’s and women’s team winners.
