ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Wichita State was picked second in the Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball preseason poll while Alex Harden became the program’s first-ever preseason Player of the Year in the annual survey of the league’s coaches, sports information directors, and media members.

The league voted Indiana State atop the poll with 26 first-place votes and 378 total points.  The Shockers garnered 360 points and 13 first-place votes.  Loyola, a newcomer to the league, captured the other first-place vote but was picked to finish sixth.

Harden, a junior, was the 2012-13 MVC Defensive Player of the Year and earned the MVC Tournament MVP.  She was also selected a first-team all-Valley member while leading the Shockers in points, rebounds, assists, blocked shots, and steals.  She was included in the league’s all-freshman team in 2011-12.

Also returning for the Shockers are sophomore Michaela Dapprich, redshirt freshman Alie Decker, junior Kelsey Jacobs, and senior Michelle Price.  Those players all contributed to a record-breaking season for WSU.  The 2012-13 Shockers set the school record for victories (24) while earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.  Wichita State also won the regular season and conference tournament championships for the first time.
