WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State, the 65th ranked tennis team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s National Rankings, returns to action Wednesday when they face Cowley at the Rock Road Genesis Health Club in Wichita at 1 p.m. Wednesday’s match will be the second of an eight dual-match homestand for the Shockers.
The Shockers come into Wednesday’s dual-match against the Tigers with a 4-5 record. Those wins were against Georgia State twice (including once while they were ranked 64th), and took down Newman and Oral Roberts back on Oct. 11, 2013 in a double-header.
Their five losses are all against ranked opponents including No. 32 Tulsa, No. 5 Oklahoma, No. 2 USC, No. 63 East Tennessee State and No. 25 Oklahoma State.
Tin Ostojic, the 20th ranked men’s tennis athlete in the ITA’s Central Singles Rankings, leads the team in singles play with an 11-4 dual-match record. Ilija Cuic is second with a 10-9 dual-match record.
The team of Ostojic/Cuic, the 9th ranked doubles team in the ITA’s Central Doubles Rankings, has a 5-3 record while Tomislav Gregurovic/Guillermo Nicol is 3-1 as a doubles team.
Cowley is just 0-1 on the year after falling 5-4 to Cameron University on Febuary 14 in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Tigers come into Wednesday’s match against the Shockers ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA rankings.
Ostojic/Gregurovic Playing Strong in Singles Play
Ostojic and Gregurovic are both on impressive winning streaks. While Ostojic carries a three dual-match winning streak and is 6-2 in his last eight matches, Gregurovic has a four dual-match winning streak of his own. Both look to continue their strong play as they take on the Tigers on Wednesday.
Another MVC Notable Performance
Due to Ostojic’s efforts during the No. 25 Oklahoma State dual-match, the Missouri Valley Conference recognized him on Tuesday for having a notable performance. This is Ostojic’s second time earning the honor, as he was also recognized on Jan. 28 for having notable performances when he went 2-1 in combined matches against Georgia State (who was ranked No. 64 at the time) and No. 2 USC. This was while the Shockers competed during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.
Ostojic was 1-1 in combined play during his matches against No. 25 Oklahoma State. He and doubles partner Gregurovic lost to the team of Brady Bohrnstedt/Arjun Kadhe 4-6. He would later defeat Kadhe in singles action by a score of 6-5(5), 6-3. Ostojic’s point was important because it tied the match at one apiece.
Last Time Out
No. 65 Wichita State fell to No. 25 Oklahoma State 4-2 on Feb. 13. This was the Shockers’ only dual-match during the last week.
