Scouting George Mason
The Patriots are 3-0 after beating Morehead State twice and USC Upstate over the weekend. In the three games, George Mason hit .398 with a 2.33 ERA. Chris Cook went 8-for-13 with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI, while Tucker Tobin went 8-for-14 with seven RBI. The Patriots are led by 33rd-year head coach Bill Brown.

Scouting Illinois
The Illini are 1-2 after losing a series at Georgia State over the weekend. In the series, Illinois hit .296 with a 9.11 ERA. Will Krug went 7-for-16 with three RBI, while Reid Roper drove in seven. The Illini are led by ninth-year head coach Dan Hartleb.

Series History vs. the Illini
Wichita State leads the overall series with Illinois 8-2. The two teams met four times in Wichita in 1979 with the Shockers winning all four. The two teams met six times in Wichita in 1980 with the Shockers winning four of them and Illinois winning two of them.

Scouting Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers are 1-2 after dropping a series to Pittsburgh over the weekend. In the series, Coastal Carolina hit .316 with a 2.88 ERA. Tyler Chadwick went 5-for-7 with for four RBI, while G.K. Young went 5-for-10 with four RBI. The Chanticleers are led by 25th-year head coach Gary Gilmore.

Hitting Streak Alive for Gillaspie
Casey Gillaspie came into the 2014 season on a three-game hitting streak.  He had a hit in all three games of the SIUE series and a hit against Central Arkansas to increase the streak to seven games.

Tewes Makes His Debut
Freshman right-hander Sam Tewes made his debut on Tuesday against Central Arkansas. He pitched 4.1 innings and allowed one run on no hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Off to a Strong Start
Wichita State began the Todd Butler era with three-straight wins over SIUE and a win over Central Arkansas. The Shockers are now 34-3 in home openers since 1978 and 73-3 all-time at home in the month of February.

Pitching Staff Impressive
The Wichita State pitching staff got off to an impressive start against SIUE. The staff allowed just two earned runs in 27 innings for a 0.67 ERA. In those 27 innings, the staff allowed just 17 hits with seven walks and 32 strikeouts.

Brummett Back at It
Sophomore pitcher Garrett Brummett picked up where he left off last season. As a starting pitcher in 2013, Brummett allowed just one run in his six starts. As a starter, he is now 5-0 with a 0.26 ERA in seven starts. He has pitched 35 innings and has allowed just two runs (one earned) on 27 hits with eight walks and 21 strikeouts.

20 runs/20 hits
Wichita State scored 21 runs on 24 hits on Sunday against SIUE. It was the first time the Shockers have scored 20 or more runs in a game since Feb. 25, 2012, when they scored 26 against North Dakota. It was the first time the Shockers had 20 or more hits since they had 20 against Evansville on April 15, 2012.

Newcomers Debut
Nine newcomers made their Wichita State debut over the weekend against SIUE. Position players Chase Simpson, Zair Koeiman and Wes Phillips and pitchers Ray Ashford, Austin Gardner, Cody Tyler, Reagan Biechler, TJ Looney and Mitch McIntyre all played against the Cougars. Freshman Sam Tewes made his debut on Tuesday against Central Arkansas.

Looking for 100
Head Coach Todd Butler is getting closer to his 100th career win as a head coach. Butler is currently 94-83 in his career and needs just six wins to reach 100.

Weekly Nominees
Player of the Week - Garrett Bayliff
Senior outfielder Garrett Bayliff led the Shockers to a 3-0 weekend on the opening weekend of the season. He went 6-for-11 (.545) with six runs, seven RBI, one double, one home run, two walks and two hit by pitch. In the opener against SIUE, he went 1-for-3 with a run, three RBI, a double, a walk and a hit by pitch. In game two against the Cougars, he went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI, a hit by pitch and his first career home run. In the finale against SIUE, he went 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and a walk.
Pitcher of the Week Nominee - Ray Ashford
Junior pitcher Ray Ashford made his Shocker debut on Friday against SIUE and had a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a strikeout. On Saturday against the Cougars, he pitched 2.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts and earned his first save. He came into the game in the top of the seventh with the Shockers leading 5-3. The Cougars had the bases loaded with two outs, but Ashford struck out the batter to preserve the 5-3 lead.
Scholar-Athlete of the Week - Parker Zimmerman
Sophomore catcher Parker Zimmerman helped the Shockers to a 3-0 weekend with a sweep over SIUE. Zimmerman went 6-for-12 (.500) with three runs, three doubles, two RBI, a walk and a hit by pitch. He also had a perfect fielding percentage in 35 total chances behind the plate. He also threw out a runner trying to steal second. He caught every inning of all three games and helped guide the pitching staff to a 0.67 ERA on the weekend. The staff allowed just 17 hits in 27 innings pitched with seven walks and 32 strikeouts. In game one against SIUE, he went 1-for-4 with a run and in game two he went 1-for-3. In the finale against the Cougars, he went 4-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and three doubles. The four hits and three doubles were both career-highs. Zimmerman has a 3.862 GPA in exercise science.
