WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State softball team will continue the non-conference preseason tournament portion of its schedule, traveling to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Unconquered Classic Fri., Feb. 21-23.
Following a 1-3 finish at the UTSA Classic this past weekend; Wichita State will look to build on the success it found early in the season. Freshman Kelli Spring led the Shockers in the win against tournament host, UTSA, in 10 innings with a RBI single up the middle to give Wichita State the 3-2 advantage. The Shockers fell to Rutgers, Oklahoma State and Colorado State on the weekend and look to improve at the plate this weekend.
The Shockers are scheduled to play a pair of games Friday, beginning with a 1:30 p.m. (CST) matchup with UC Santa Barbara (6-3). The Gauchos are led by sophomore outfielder Arianna Palomares and freshman outfielder Kristen Clark. Palomares leads UCSB with a .469 batting average with a double and a triple on 15 hits, while Clark enters the tournament hitting .371 on 13 hits with three triples and two RBIs.
Following the game against UCSB, the Shockers take on Charleston Southern at 6:30 p.m. (CST). The Buccaneers dropped a pair to Jacksonville State Sat., Feb. 15 and come into the tournament sporting a 6-2-1 record. Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Gandara boasts a 2-1 record for Charleston Southern and enters the tournament with a 1.67 ERA.
On Saturday, Wichita State will play Charleston Southern for a second game at 1 p.m. (CST) and will play Florida A&M immediately following at 3:30 p.m. (CST). The Rattlers come to Tallahassee, Fla., on a three-game losing streak. Florida A&M have amassed a 1-9 record and has three players hitting over .300.
The Shockers will wrap-up the Unconquered Classic Sun., Feb. 23 when they take on tournament host, No. 10 Florida State at 8 a.m. (CST). The Seminoles are on a nine-game winning streak, starting the season with a 10-1 record. Redshirt junior Maddie O’Brien, who is hitting .536, including 15 hits, three doubles, five home runs and 21 RBIs, leads Florida State coming into the tournament. The Seminoles will face UCF on ESPN3 before hosting the Unconquered Classic.
