MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Casey Gillaspie went 3-for-3 to lead Wichita State to a 5-2 win over host Coastal Carolina at the Baseball at the Beach Tournament. Gillaspie finished with three runs, two walks and an RBI.
Starter Sam Tewes earned the win as he went five innings and gave up one run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Reliever Foster Vielock picked up his second save of the season.
Coastal Carolina jumped on the board with a run in the second. Zach Remillard led off with a single up the middle and after stealing second, he went to third on a one-out single to centerfield from Richard Carter. A bunt from Nick Oberg brought home Remillard to give the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead.
The Shockers would answer in the third. Casey Gillaspie walked with one out in the third and advanced to third on a two-out double to left-center from Chase Simpson. Gillaspie scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at one.
Gillaspie led off the fifth with a single up the middle and scored on a triple to right field by Tyler Baker to give the Shocks a 2-1 lead. Daniel Kihle singled to centerfield with one out to drive in Baker and give the Shocks a 3-1 lead.
The Shockers tacked on another run in the seventh. Gillaspie led off with a single and moved to second on a single from Chase Simpson. He scored on a two-out single from Micah Green to put the Shocks in front 4-1.
In the eighth, Tanner Dearman doubled down the left field line with one out and moved to third on a ground out. Gillaspie singled to centerfield to drive in Dearman to make the score 5-1.
The Chanticleers got a run back in the bottom of the eighth. Remillard singled to left field with one out and after a walk put runners at first and second, Carter singled to right field to cut the lead to 5-2.
The Shockers are next in action on Mon., Feb. 24 against Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m. (Central).
