SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Wichita State used a seven-run fifth inning to defeat No. 20 UC Santa Barbara 16-5 in game two of a three-game series.
Dayne Parker went 4-for-6 with four RBI and a double, while Tyler Baker went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a double and a home run. Chase Simpson finished with four RBI.
Starter Cale Elam went seven innings and gave up two runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Shockers jumped on the board in the third inning. With one out, Tanner Kirk singled to left field and after a walk to Joe Haddox, Tanner Dearman doubled down the left-field line to score Kirk for the 1-0 lead. Dayne Parker then doubled to left field to score both Haddox and Dearman to put the Shocks up 3-0.
WSU scored seven more runs in the fifth. With one out, Haddox reached on an error and with two outs, Parker singled in Haddox for a 4-0 lead. Casey Gillaspie then singled to right field and Garrett Bayliff singled to centerfield to score Parker. After a walk to Tyler Baker, Micah Green singled to left field to drive in Gillaspie and Bayliff and Chase Simpson homered to right field to drive in Baker and Green for a 10-0 lead.
Tyler Kuresa led off the seventh with a double to left field and after a walk to Andrew Calica, both runners moved into scoring on a wild pitch with one out. Kuresa scored on a groundout from Cameron Newell and Calica scored on a pinch-hit single from Billy Frederick to cut the lead to 10-2.
Parker and Gillaspie led off the eighth with singles and both scored on Baker’s first home run of the season for a 13-2 lead. The Shockers added on two more and another run in the ninth for the 16-2 score.
The Gauchos scored three runs in the ninth for the final 16-5 score.
The Shockers and Gauchos wrap up the series on Sun., March 16 at 3 p.m. Central time.
