WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State softball team will host MVC rival Northern Iowa April 12-13 in a three-game series at Wilkins Stadium beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday. The game will feature the Shockers (22-17, 9-3) and the Panthers (21-10, 8-3) in a race for first place in the Missouri Valley.
Wichita State enters the series after dropping two games in the midweek against the Oklahoma Sooners (3-0, 9-1), while the Panthers come in off of a 4-0 loss to Nebraska on Wednesday.
Cacy Williams leads the Shockers thus far in the season, boasting a .390 batting average and leading the team in total runs (32), hits (46), triples (2) and home runs (8). Paige Luellen follows closely behind with a .383 average, seven home runs and leads the team in RBIs (34). Sloan Anderson (8-11) and Katie Malone (12-5) lead Wichita State on the mound, combining for 161 total strikeouts and 10 complete games in 225 innings between the two pitchers.
Rikki Alcaraz leads the Panthers with a .337 average in 31 games, with 18 total runs, 32 hits, 11 doubles and three homeruns. Jamie Fisher (12-7) leads Northern Iowa on the mound with an overall 2.34 ERA with 15 complete games and 100 strikeouts in 131.2 innings pitched.
The Shockers will look to take a commanding lead in the Missouri Valley against the preseason favorite after being picked eighth in the preseason poll.
