BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – No. 54 Wichita State defeated Drake by a score of 4-0 to win the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Team Championship on Sunday at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington. The Shockers moved to 19-6 on the year while the Bulldogs dropped to 16-6.

With the win, the Shockers earned their sixth straight MVC Team Championship and the MVC’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid. This is the eighth time in the last nine seasons in which the Shockers won the MVC Team Championship and earned the MVC’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid. The only time the Shockers have not won the MVC Team Championship since 2006 was back in 2008 when the Shockers placed second.

Doubles play began with a Lucia Kovalova/Veronika Blaskova 8-4 win against Klavdija Rebol/Lea Kozulic at No. 1 doubles. Julia Schiller/Abby Stevens (MVC All-First Team at No. 3 doubles) clinched the doubles point and gave the Shockers the 1-0 dual-match lead after taking down Mariel Ante/Jordan Eggleston 8-7(0) at No. 3 doubles.

Schiller (the MVC Player of the Year and MVC-All-First Team at No. 1 singles) gave the Shockers a 2-0 match lead after defeating Rebol 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Blaskova (MVC All-First Team at No. 6 singles) won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles over Kozulic to extend the Shocker lead to 3-0 and on the brink of the MVC Team Championship.

Stevens clinched the MVC Team Championship for the Shockers and the 4-0 victory after winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Shocker head women’s tennis coach Colin Foster thought the team played well in route to their MVC Team Championship.

“This team played beautifully today as they have done all year,” Foster said. “We knew Drake would give us a good fight, but I thought we met their level of competitiveness and played stronger tennis from start to finish.”

The Shockers will find out who they compete against and when they compete in the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. during the 2014 NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament Selection Show. Tuesday’s selection show will be streamed live on and at the women’s tennis team selection show party inside the Champions Club at Charles Koch Arena.
