NORMAL, Ill. – Wichita State wrapped up the regular-season with a 15-5 run-rule win over Illinois State.
Garrett Bayliff went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Casey Gillaspie went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run.
Starter Kris Gardner went 3.2 shutout innings and allowed two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Shockers jumped on the board in the top of the first. With one out, Dayne Parker walked and Casey Gillaspie reached on an error that scored Parker from first for a 1-0 lead. Gillaspie later scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 2-0.
With two outs in the second inning, Garrett Bayliff and Parker both walked and Gillaspie singled up the middle to score Bayliff and give the Shocks a 3-0 lead.
WSU used two hits, three walks and a hit batsman in the third inning to increase the lead to 6-0.
Daniel Kihle’s three-run triple highlighted the fifth inning when the Shockers scored seven runs to go in front 13-0.
Gillaspie’s two-run home run in the sixth gave WSU a 15-0 lead. It was Gillaspie’s 15th home run of the season.
The Redbirds use an RBI single from Brock Stewart and a grand slam from Jack Czeszewski to cut the lead to 15-5 in the sixth.
The Shockers will be the No. 4 seed in next week’s Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and will face No. 5 Illinois State at 8 a.m. (Central) on Tue., May 20 in Terre Haute, Ind.
