Joe Carter (Baseball, 1979-81)The first great star under Coach Gene Stephenson, Carter brought national prominence to a baseball program revived in 1978. In each of his three seasons as an outfielder on the Shocker squad, he was named an All-American and earned NCAA Player of the Year honors in 1981 from both The Sporting News and All-America Baseball News. An outstanding athlete, he played football for one year before devoting his attention strictly to baseball. Carter set numerous offensive records, including most home runs in a career with 58 and career batting average of .430. As a freshman, he establisher a season batting record by hitting .450. He was a first-round draft choice in 1981 of the Chicago Cubs and blossomed into a major league star with the Cleveland Indians. Inducted, 1988.
