Building Excellence for the Student-Athlete Campaign
Wichita State has embarked on a “Building Excellence for the Student-Athlete” campaign, the crux of which is an indoor practice facility adjacent to Eck Stadium, former Director of Athletics Jim Schaus announced on July 10, 2007.
The project is divided into two phases, which total $7.5 million, based on priority of need. However, it is the committed intentions of the campaign to fund and construct both phases together and as soon as possible.
Phase I of the project includes the 170’ x 170’ (29,000 square feet) Bombardier Learjet Indoor Practice Facility with AstroTurf®, full infield and retractable batting cages. The climate-controlled facility will be utilized during inclement weather by Shocker baseball as well as Shocker softball, track and golf teams. It will also be used for conditioning and training activities by all 15 sport programs. The initial phase also included the installation of a new AstroTurf® playing surface for infield and all areas behind home plate, in front of dugouts and outfield warning track.
The Bombardier-Learjet Indoor Practice Facility was finished in December 2009, while the new AstroTurf® field was completed in September 2009.
Phase II includes a new third base side home team locker room (lower level) with dressing area, team room, showers/restrooms, satellite athletic training facility and equipment room. The second phase also includes the relocation of WSU’s baseball offices (ground level) and home team dugouts to third base side for convenient access to the new home team locker room and indoor practice facility.
The project also includes the lowering of both dugouts for improved sight lines for players, coaches and fans and additional third baseline seating and concourse area.
