WICHITA -- A dominant pitching performance from Charlie Lowell coupled with timely hitting and solid defense helped the Wichita State University baseball team defeat Creighton University, 8-0, Friday evening.
Preston Springer, Don Lambert and Tyler Grimes each homered for the Shockers as Wichita State improves to 29-21 on the season and 8-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The loss drops Creighton to 31-11, 9-4 in the Valley.
The story of the game was the pitching performance of Lowell who held the Bluejay bats to only five hits in the complete game effort. Lowell did not walk a batter while sitting down eight Bluejays' on strikes to pick up his ninth win of the season.
Springer was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI while Lambert was 1-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.
Tyler Grimes went 4-for-5 from the dish with a run scored and an RBI, including his third home run of the season.
Trever Adams stroked two of Creighton's five hits in the game.
O'Brien extending his hitting streak to 15 games in the bottom of the first inning with a line-drive shot to the right-center field gap. O'Brien's hit allowed Kevin Hall to score all the way from first base to put the Shockers on the board.
O'Brien advanced to third two pitches later and then was driven home on an RBI single off the bat of Johnny Coy. With today's game O'Brien has hit safely in 25 of his last 26 games dating back to the Oregon series.
O'Brien finished the game going 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI
The Shockers continued to pour on the offense in the third inning as Johnny Coy recorded his second hit of the game and was driven home on a Springer single through the left-side.
Wichita State pounded out 10 hits in the first four innings.
Springer launched his seventh home run of the season in the fifth inning to put the Shockers up 4-0.
Lambert sent a drive over the left-center field fence on the first pitch he saw in the seventh inning to increase the Shocker lead to 7-0. The home run was Lambert's second of the season.
Grimes' homer in the eighth capped the scoring for Wichita State.
Game two between the Shockers and Bluejays is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, at 2 p.m.
