SAN MARCOS, Texas - Wichita State dropped its season opener to Louisiana-Lafayette in a 1-0 pitchers duel.
The Ragin' Cajuns scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. TJ McGreevy hit leadoff batter Michael Strentz and after he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, Daniel Nichols hit a two-out single through the left side. Strentz scored on a close play at the plate to give ULL the 1-0 lead.
Erik Harbutz went 2-for-4 with a double for the Shockers. Starter Josh Smith went 5.1 innings and allowed just one hit with four walks and three strikeouts.
The Shockers will play Santa Clara yet tonight and then finish the tournament with host Texas State at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
