WICHITA, Kan. — Dayne Parker's walk-off single scored Tyler Coughenour to complete a six-run bottom of the ninth inning for Wichita State Friday and seal an 8-7 win against Long Beach State at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing the visiting Dirtbags by five runs before scoring six runs on five hits and three Long Beach State errors in final the half inning.
Friday marked the first time since a March 8, 2008 game against Harvard that the Shockers overcame a deficit of five or more runs in a win.
Wichita State improved to 14-10 and Long Beach State fell to 6-14 in front of a crowd of 2,924.
Shocker pitcher Tobin Mateychick picked up his first win of the season on the mound in the first of a three-game series between the teams. Long Beach State pitcher Josh Frye was credited with the loss (1-2).
Parker led Wichita State with four hits. Taylor Doggett and Josh Halbert posted two RBI each for the Shockers.
The Dirtbags scored four runs on four hits in the second inning for a 4-0 lead. Matt Duffy's single through the left side scored two in the inning.
Ryan Hege's ground-rule double scored Parker in the bottom of the second inning to cut Long Beach State's lead to three runs.
Long Beach State regained its four-run lead on an Ino Patron single to center field in the seventh inning. Jeff McNeil scored for a 5-1 Dirtbag lead.
The Shockers answered in the bottom of the seventh inning. Aaron Rea scored on Halbert's single up the middle to cut the score to 5-2.
In the top of the ninth, Long Beach State's Juan Avila stole third base, then scored on a WSU throwing error for a 6-2 lead. The Dirtbags added another run on a Richard Prigatano single.
The Shockers made their rally during the bottom of the ninth inning. Parker doubled to left center and advanced to third on a fielding error by the Long Beach State centerfielder. Parker later scored on a Halbert single.
A two-RBI single through the right side by Doggett scored Halbert and Garrett Bayliff, cutting the Dirtbags' lead to two runs with no outs.
Casey Gillaspie walked with the bases loaded, scoring Kevin Hall to cut the score to, 7-6, with one out.
Rea reached on a fielder's choice and Don Lambert scored to tie the game, 7-7.
The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday and concludes with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Eck Stadium.
