WICHITA, Kan. – Joe Haddox doubled to deep left centerfield that scored Garrett Bayliff in the 12th inning to give the Shockers the MVC conference-opening win against the Redbirds of Illinois State. T.J. McGreevy is credited with the win pitching the last four innings and only giving up three hits. Bayliff went 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Shocker offense.
The Shockers started the scoring in the first inning after a Johnny Coy sacrifice fly that plated Tanner Dearman to give the Shockers an early 1-0 lead.
Illinois State tied things up in the second with a RBI single from Mike Hollenbeck that scored Eric Aguilera. The Redbirds were threatening again in the second with runners on first and second and one out but the Shockers turned a double play to keep the score tied at 1-1.
In the third inning, a two out double from Tyler Baker led to a Garrett Bayliff RBI single to left that scored Baker and the Shockers regained the lead 2-1 after three.
The Redbirds scored two runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead highlighted by a two-out RBI double from Zac Johnson that plated Chad Henshaw. The threat ended with a strikeout from Cale Elam that left two runners stranded on base.
Casey Gillaspie led off the bottom half of the fifth with a single up the middle and later scored on a Baker sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3. Both teams would not score for the remainder four innings as they went into extra innings.
In the 12th inning, Garrett Bayliff and Dayne Parker hit back-to-back singles before Joe Haddox doubled to left centerfield with two outs to score Bayliff and give the Shockers the dramtic 4-3 extra inning win.
The Shockers will conclude their three game series with the Redbirds tomorrow in a doubleheader with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
