PEORIA, Ill. – Wichita State had six players with a least two hits as the Shockers collected a season high in hits (18) and runs (18) and swept the series against the Bradley Braves with a 18-8 run-rule win on Sunday afternoon. Erik Harbutz and Micah Green led the offensive slugfest for the Shockers. Harbutz went 3-for-5 with a career high six RBI and three doubles and Green was 4-for-6 with four RBI.

Wichita State did not hesitate to start the scoring early. Casey Gillaspie and Micah Green both singled that brought home Cody Bobbit and Garrett Bayliff for a 2-0 first inning lead. Erik Harbutz doubled to center that scored Gillaspie and Green and the Shockers put up four runs in the first frame.

Two walks and a single by Max Murphy loaded the bases for the Braves in the first inning. A wild pitch from Shocker starter Drew Palmer scored Nolan Sponsler and a sacrifice fly by Greg Partyka allowed another Bradley run to come across and the Wichita State lead was cut in half, 4-2.

Bobbit recorded his second hit of the game after a single to right in the second inning. Bobbit then advanced to second on an errant throw from Bradley pitcher Eric Scheuermann and later would score on a RBI single from Bayliff. Tyler Baker’s RBI single scored Bayliff from second and the Shockers took a 6-2 lead. Baker scored the seventh run for Wichita State on a Green single to left after Bradley left fielder Mike Tauchman lost the ball in the sun.

Three singles by the Braves loaded the bases in the second inning and Tauchman drove in two runs with a double to left field as the Shockers lead was now 7-4. Murphy drew a walk before Partyka blooped a 2 RBI single to right field that brought the Braves within one run, 7-6.  

The Shockers took advantage of three walks to load the bases for Green in the third inning. Green doubled to left field that scored two and gave Wichita State a three run lead, 9-6.

Bradley managed to get one run in the third when Sponsler’s sacrifice fly let Tyler Leffler come home as the Braves got within two runs, 9-7.

In the fifth inning, Baker, Gillaspie, and Green all singled and Harbutz doubled off the right field wall that scored Baker and Gillaspie for an 11-7 lead. Johnny Coy matched Harbutz with another two RBI double to deep centerfield as the Shockers took a 13-7 advantage. Coy would later score on a wild pitch to put up the fifth run of the inning and the Shockers had a seven run lead, 14-7.

Parker Zimmerman scored when Baker drew his second walk of the game and Gillaspie’s sacrifice fly scored Bobbit to increase the Shocker lead to 16-8 in the eighth inning. Harbutz hit his third double of the game that scored Bayliff and Baker to give the Shockers the ten run lead.

The Shockers are next in action on Tuesday night, April 16 when they take on Kansas State in Eck Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
