BSB: Shockers Hold Off Purple Aces, 5-4

WICHITA, Kan.- Cale Elam moved his record to 5-1 on the season as Wichita State defeated Evansville 5-4 on Friday night at Eck Stadium

Elam pitched 7.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out six. Garrett Bayliff went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Micah Green also knocked in two runs, going 1-for-4. Tyler Baker was 3-for-4 with a double and Erik Harbutz went a perfect 3-for-3.

Shain Showers went 2-for-4 at the plate for Evansville with a RBI.

Wichita State scored the first runs of the game in the third inning. Baker led off with a double, and three batters later he scored on a Bayliff single to right field. Bayliff then stole second, moved to third on a single by Erik Harbutz and scored when Casey Gillaspie knocked a ball up the middle for another Shocker hit. Green plated two more with a two-out infield single to the shortstop that put Wichita State up 4-0.

Evansville grabbed a run in the fourth after Jonathan Ramon was hit by a pitch and scored two batters later on a RBI single by Showers.

Bayliff put the Shockers back up four, scoring Baker yet again, on a single to center field in the bottom half of the fourth.

David Patton singled to lead off the eighth inning for the Purple Aces and scored three batters later on a throwing error by Elam. Chris Pearson scored later in the inning on a wild pitch, and Jason Hockemeyer scored another run for Evansville on a balk by Shocker reliever Brandon Peterson to cut the Wichita State lead to 5-4.

Peterson retired the first three batters in the ninth inning to get the save and seal the victory for Wichita State.

The Shockers and Purple Aces will play game two of the series on Saturday at Eck Stadium. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
