CARBONDALE, Ill. – A.J. Ladwig moved his record to 4-4 on the season as Wichita State defeated Southern Illinois 8-4 on Saturday afternoon at Abe Martin Field, tying the series 1-1.
Ladwig pitched six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out five. Garrett Bayliff went 3-for-6 at the plate with a RBI.
The Shockers (25-20) took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, reaching to the plate on a fielding error by the Salukis. Gillaspie led off with a single to center field and advanced to third on a single by Coy to right field.
Wichita State grabbed another run in the second after Dayne Parker walked on four pitches and scored two batters later on a RBI by Bayliff.
The Shockers added an unearned run in the top of the third after Johnny Coy was walked and advanced to second on a Kihle ground out to third base, Parker reached on a throwing error by the Salukis, scoring Coy and extending the Wichita State lead, 3-0.
Southern Illinois (20-22) cut Wichita State’s lead in the bottom of the third when Jake Welch singled to the left field, followed by a single to right field by Rennie Troggio, advancing Welch to third, Matt Jones then hit a two-run double to left field, cutting the Shocker lead 3-2.
Southern Illinois threatened to score again in the bottom of the fourth with Cody Daily and Wes Neece in scoring position but Ladwig struck Ryan Rosthenhausler out to end the inning and keep the Shockers lead 3-2.
The Shockers extended their lead, 4-2 in the top of the fifth when Parker hit an RBI single through the left side, scoring Gillaspie before Haddox grounded into a double play.
In the sixth inning, the Salukis tied up the ballgame behind a double to center field from Ryan Casillas followed by a Luke Mottashed single and a Shocker error, which scored Casillas. Mottashed would then score on a Neece fly out to right field.
A pitch would hit Coy in the top of the seventh and Doggett would pinch run, putting the go-ahead run on first. Doggett stole second and then advanced to third on a Saluki throwing error. Harbutz reached on a fielder’s choice but then advanced to second on another Saluki throwing error, scoring Doggett, giving the Shockers the lead once again, 5-4.
Wichita State stayed hot in the top of the ninth inning when Gillaspie singled up the middle and then advanced to second on a SAC bunt from Doggett. Gillaspie would score two batters later on a single from Kirk to right field. Kirk stole second and Parker was walked, which loaded the bases and Haddox drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Harbutz. Kirk would score on a wild pitch, extending the Shocker lead, 8-4.
The Shockers and Salukis finish the series Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
