CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Wichita State baseball team earned a series victory over the Southern Illinois Salukis with a 5-2 win Saturday at Abe Martin Field.
T.J. McGreevy gets the win and improves his record to 4-2 on the season. McGreevy allowed three hits and struck out one.
Wichita State got on the board first in the top of the second after Micah Green singled to center field. Green would score two batters later when Tyler Baker singled to right field, giving the Shockers a 1-0 advantage.
The Shockers continued the hitting streak in the third inning when Bayliff hit a double to right field. Bayliff would then score on a single by Harbutz to extend Wichita State’s lead 2-0.
Southern Illinois tied the game in the bottom of the third after Rosthenhausler doubled to center field, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Welch singled to center field, scoring Rosthenhausler and cut the Shocker lead 2-1. Welch would score two batters later on a Jones single through the left side, tying the game 2-2.
The Shockers went ahead in the sixth inning after Coy reached on a throwing error by the Salukis. Green advanced Coy to second on a single to the left field and Kirk hit a SAC bunt to advance Coy to third and Green to second. Baker reached on a fielder’s choice, loading the bases for Wichita State.
Tanner Dearman saw the plate for the first time this series and would draw a bases loaded walk to score Coy and give the Shockers a 3-2 advantage. Baker and Green would score after Bayliff hit a single to right field, extending the Wichita State lead 5-2.
The three-run sixth inning would be enough for the Shockers to put-away the Salukis and win the series 2-1.
The Shockers are next in action when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Kansas Jayhawks Tuesday, April 30. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark.
