SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Wichita State scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Missouri State 3-2 in game one of a three-game series.
Tanner Dearman went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Taylor Doggett went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Starter Cale Elam earned a no decision. He went 6.2 innings and gave up two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Reliever Albert Minnis earned the win as he pitched 2.1 shutout innings with three strikeouts.
Taylor Doggett led off the third inning with a triple to left-center and scored on a single from Tanner Dearman to give the Shocks a 1-0 lead.
The Bears tied it at one with a solo home run from Eric Cheray in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead in the sixth. Cheray led off the sixth inning with a triple down the right field line and scored on a single through the left side from Luke Voit with two outs to give MSU a 2-1 lead.
Mikel Mucha tripled to right-center with one out in the seventh and scored on a two-out single to centerfield from Doggett to tie the score at two.
With two outs and nobody on, Doggett reached on a bunt single in the top of the ninth. He stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. Dearman singled to left field to score Doggett and give WSU a 3-2 lead.
The Shockers and Bears wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sun., May 5 at 11 a.m.
