WICHITA, Kan.- A combined shutout from the Shocker pitching staff and a Casey Gillaspie grand slam helped Wichita State defeat Northwestern 5-0.
Aaron LaBrie improved his record to 4-1 with the win. The Shockers leader in ERA tossed two scoreless innings in relief and allowed two base runners. LaBrie’s ERA now stands at 0.91.
Brandon Magallones took the loss for Northwestern. He fell to 5-6 despite throwing seven innings of one run ball. Magallones allowed six hits and one walk, and recorded three strikeouts.
A.J. Ladwig started the game for the Shockers and tossed six scoreless innings. The sophomore allowed five hits and struck out four Wildcats. He did not walk a batter.
The Shockers scored the game’s first run in the seventh inning. Mikel Mucha slugged a two-out ground rule double. Erik Harbutz drove in Mucha with a single to left to give WSU a 1-0 lead. Harbutz went 2-for-2 with a walk.
Casey Gillaspie added to the Shockers lead in the eighth when he launched a grand slam over the left field wall. Micah Green, Tanner Dearman, and Tyler Baker all scored to give the Shockers a 5-0 lead. The home run was Gillaspie’s ninth of the season.
Brandon Peterson sealed the win for the Shockers with a scoreless ninth inning. Wichita State improved to 33-25 with the win.
The Shockers will wrap up their series with the Wildcats and their home season on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
