BSB: Shocks Stay Alive With 11-4 Win Over CU

NORMAL, Ill. – Wichita State used 11 runs on 17 hits and a complete game from A.J. Ladwig to defeat Creighton 11-4 in an elimination game in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

The Shockers will now play the loser of the Indiana State/Southern Illinois game at 9 a.m. on Thurs., May 23.

Ladwig threw the first complete game of his career as he gave up four runs on 10 hits with no walks and a career-high eight strikeouts.

Casey Gillaspie went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a home run, while Johnny Coy went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a home run.

Tanner Dearman led off the first inning with a single up the middle and moved to third on a single to right-center from Garrett Bayliff.  Tyler Baker doubled off of the top of the right field wall to bring home Dearman and Casey Gillaspie singled through the right side to drive in Bayliff and Baker for a 3-0 Shocker lead.

The Bluejays answered with a run in the second. Reagan Fowler led off with an infield single to third base and with two outs he scored on an infield single from Jordan Mackovicka to cut the lead to 3-1.

Gillaspie homered to left field with one out in the third to put the Shocks in front 4-1 and after a Coy double, Erik Harbutz singled to right field with two outs to give WSU a 5-1 lead.

Alex Staehley led off the fourth with a single and scored on a triple by Fowler to cut the lead to 5-2. Kevin Lamb then drove in Fowler to make the score 5-3.

Gillaspie walked with two outs in the fifth and scored on Coy’s home run to left field for a 7-3 advantage, but Creighton’s Mike Gerber answered with a home run of his own in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-4.

The Shockers tacked on two more in the sixth. Harbutz and Dayne Parker led off with singles and after a bunt by Micah Green, Harbutz scored on a sacrifice fly from Bayliff. Parker scored on a single from Baker for a 9-4 lead.

Mucha and Harbutz led off the seventh with a walk and a single and after an RBI single from Parker, another run scored on a double play for an 11-4 lead.
