NORMAL, Ill. – Garrett Brummett threw five shutout innings and Mikel Mucha drove in a career-high four runs as Wichita State defeated Southern Illinois 15-0 in seven innings.
The Shockers advance to play Indiana State at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Mucha went 3-for-4 with four RBI and his first career home run. Johnny Coy went 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Garrett Bayliff went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Brummett allowed just three hits in five innings and had a career-high seven strikeouts.
The Shockers jumped on the board in the top of the first. Tanner Dearman singled, Garrett Bayliff walked and Tyler Baker singled to load the bases. Casey Gillaspie hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Dearman and Johnny Coy singled to right field to score Bayliff for a 2-0 lead.
Coy and Erik Harbutz led off the fourth with walks and with one out, Mikel Mucha hit his first career home run to right field to give the Shocks a 5-0. Dayne Parker and Tanner Dearman earned back-to-back walks and Bayliff singled up the middle to score Parker for a 6-0 lead.
The Shocks scored six more in the fifth for a 12-0 lead. Coy collected two hits in the inning, while Green doubled, and Bayliff singled.
Green, Mucha, Dearman, Bayliff and Baker all singled in the sixth to increase the lead to 14-0 and Mucha doubled in another run in the seventh.
