BSB: Shocks Win Championship With 5-2 Win

NORMAL, Ill. – Wichita State won its 18th Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title with a 5-2 win over Illinois State.

Cale Elam pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with no walks and seven strikeouts to earn the win, while Aaron LaBrie pitched two shutout innings with three strikeouts to earn the save.

Tournament MVP Garrett Bayliff went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Johnny Coy went 1-for-5 with two RBI.

Garrett Bayliff walked with one out in the first and moved to third on a single from Tyler Baker. Casey Gillaspie drove in Bayliff with a fielder’s choice to give the Shocks an early 1-0 lead.

Mikel Mucha led off the second with a single to left-center and scored from first on a double down the left field line from Micah Green to give the Shocks a 2-0 lead.

The Redbirds answered with a run in the second. Mike Hollenbeck doubled down the left field line with two outs and scored on a single to centerfield from Brock Stewart to cut the Shocker lead to 2-1.

Erik Harbutz led off the fourth with a single to left field and advanced to second on a groundout from Dayne Parker. Harbutz scored on a two-out single from Bayliff to increase the Shocker lead to 3-1.

Bayliff singled and Baker walked to lead off the seventh and Gillaspie was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Coy singled to left field to drive in two runs to increase the lead to 5-1.

The Redbirds responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Hollenbeck doubled with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Paul DeJong to cut the lead to 5-2.
