LONG BEACH, Calif. - Tim Kelley pitched eight shutout innings to lead Wichita State to an 8-0 win over Long Beach State in game one of a three-game series.
Preston Springer went 3-for-5 with two RBI, a double and a triple, while Ryan Jones went 1-for-4 with three RBI and a home run.
Kelley threw just 89 pitches in his eight shutout innings and allowed just four hits while striking out four.
Two Dirtbag errors put the Shockers on the board in the fourth inning. A two-base throwing error by the shortstop put Will Baez in scoring position to lead off the inning. A failed pickoff attempt by pitcher Andrew Gagnon advanced Baez to third and he scored on an infield single by Springer to put the Shocks up 1-0.
The pitching duel between Kelley and Gagnon continued until the seventh inning. Cody Lassley led off the inning with a hard hit single to centerfield and Travis Bennett reached first on a sacrifice bunt after the attempt to get Lassley at second was late. With runners at first and second and nobody out Ryan Jones hit a bomb to right centerfield to give the Shocks a 4-0 advantage. WSU tacked on three more in the inning with triples from Kevin Hall and Springer and a sacrifice fly from Erik Harbutz.
A leadoff double by Bennett in the eighth also led to another Shocker run to make the final score 8-0.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., March 13 in game two of the series with Long Beach State. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Central time.
