WICHITA, Kan. - Southern Illinois won game three of the weekend series against Wichita State 9-5 to salvage a win in the series.
Ryan Jones went 2-for-5 with two RIB and a home run. Bret Bascue added two RBI, while Will Baez and Chris O'Brien each had two hits.
WSU got on the board in the bottom of the first as back-to-back hits by Tyler Grimes and Ryan Jones put runners at the corners with one out. SIU starting pitcher Randy Hoelscher got Preston Springer to line out to third but left fielder, Bret Bascue, lined a double to right-field, scoring both Grimes and Jones. Bascue then came around to score on an SIU fielding error for the third and final run of the inning.
Southern Illinois cut into the Shocker lead in the top of the fourth as Michael Stalter led off the game with a walk and then advanced to second on an infield single by Nick Johnson. Smith struck out the next batter but the second walk of the inning loaded the bases for Tony LePore. LePore took the 0-1 offering to left-field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Stalter for the first Saluki run.
A hit-by-pitch and a single started the top of the fifth inning for SIU. Chris Serritella came up to the plate and put the Salukis ahead 4-3 as he hit a three-run home run to left, scoring Chris Murphy and Blake Pinnon.
The Shockers retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Jones hit his seventh home run of the season, scoring Will Baez.
The see-saw battle continued in the top of the sixth as the Salukis scored three times on an RBI double off the bat of Serritella, scoring Murphy and LePore. The final run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly from Stalter which put the visiting team ahead 7-5.
A Siverston home run in the eighth inning and a home run by Austin Montgomery in the ninth capped the scoring.
The Shockers are next in action on Tue., April 13 when they travel to Nebraska.
