WICHITA -- Tim Kelley threw seven shutout innings and Tyler Coughenour went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI as the Wichita State University baseball team defeated Penn State University 9-0 Friday evening.
The Shockers improved to 13-4 on the year while Penn State falls to 10-6.
Tyler Grimes went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI while Walker Davidson was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Bobby Jacobs had a pair of hits in three trips to the plate for Penn State.
Kelley went seven strong innings, scattering six hits while issuing only one free pass. Kelley sat seven down on strikes to pick up his third win of the season.
Early in the first inning the Shockers put two runs up without getting a hit as the Nittany Lions recorded several miscues in the inning. Tyler Coughnour came through with two outs in the inning to drive in the third and final run of the frame on a single up the middle for the Shockers first hit.
WSU scored four more runs in the third inning as the Shockers collected four hits with Coughenour, Davidson and Grimes each had RBI singles. The Shockers closed out the scoring in the home half of the fifth inning as Grimes drove in a run with an RBI walk while Preston Springer had the second run of the frame on a sacrifice fly.
Springer had a run scored and an RBI in three trips to the dish.
Foster Vielock and Chance Sossamon closed out the win for WSU, combining for two innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts.
The Shockers stole seven bases against the Nittany Lions with Kevin Hall registering three steals and Don Lambert notching two more.
The second game of the three-game set is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 19. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
