STILLWATER, Okla. - Wichita State (46-15) pitcher Aaron Shafer pitched a complete game and led the Shockers to a 5-3 victory over Oklahoma State (43-17) in the winners bracket final.
Shafer (11-3) allowed two earned runs on five hits and a walk, while sitting down 10 batters with strikes.
Donnie Webb led off the game with a single and rounded with a ground ball and an error by shortstop Dusty Coleman. Neil Medchill added to the short-lived Cowboy lead with a solo home run to start the second.
The Shockers used the long ball to get back in the game with a two-run shot by Coleman in the bottom of the fourth. Clint McKeever reached on a single up the middle before Coleman’s eighth homerun of the year tied the game at two.
Wichita State manufactured two runs in the fifth to pull away with a 4-2 lead. Andy Dirks drew a lead off walk Ryan Jones moved the senior outfielder over with a sacrifice bunt. Conor Gillaspie singled in the run and advanced to second on the throw. Josh Workman beat out an infield single with two outs and plated Gillaspie.
Kevin Hall, aboard with a walk in the sixth, crossed home on an Andy Dirks hit through the right side.
The Cowboys used back-to-back hits by Luis Flores and Thomas Belza, along with a passed ball, to score one in the seventh, but Shafer and WSU’s defense made quick work of OSU in the last two innings, sealing the 5-3 win.
With the win, Wichita State secured a spot in the championship game, squaring off against the winner of Oklahoma State and TCU. The first game on Sunday begins at 1 p.m., and the Shockers play at 7 p.m.
