Shockers Take Down Jayhawks, 10-2

WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State baseball team scored runs in each of the first four innings to defeat the Kansas Jayhawks, 10-2 on Wednesday night at Eck Stadium.

Tobin Mateychick got the win for the Shockers, pitching six innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out four. He is now 3-0 on the season.

Johnny Coy went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run and three RBI. Taylor Doggett went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Taylor Doggett doubled to lead off the game for the Shockers. He then went to third on a Dayne Parker ground out, and scored when Johnny Coy grounded out to the shortstop. In the next at-bat, Casey Gillaspie hit his sixth homerun of the season over the left-field wall to put Wichita State up, 2-0.

The Shockers added another run in the second inning on an Aaron Rea groundout that scored Erik Harbutz.

Johnny Coy would get his second RBI of the game when he singled to score Doggett and put Wichita State up by four after the third inning.

Ryan Hege walked to lead off the fourth-inning, went all the way to third on a groundout by Aaron Rea, and scored on a Kevin Hall groundout to put Wichita State up, 5-0.

The Jayhawks cut the Shocker lead to four in the top of the sixth. After he doubled in the second at-bat of the inning, Tucker Tharp scored when James Stanfield singled to right field.

Kansas added another run in the seventh on a Jake Marasco double that scored Zac Elgie.

The Shockers put the game away in the seventh. After Taylor Doggett walked and a pitch hit Dayne Parker, Johnny Coy singled to score Doggett. Then, after Casey Gillaspie walked, Don Lambert knocked in Parker on a single to left field. Harbutz plated the last two runs of the inning when he singled up the middle and put the Shockers up, 9-2.

Lambert added the last run of the game for the Shockers in the eighth when he singled to score Dayne Parker.

The Shockers are back in action when they travel to Evansville, Ind. for a conference match-up against Evansville on Friday.  First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
