WICHITA, Kan. - Texas-Pan American took game one of a three-game series with a 7-5 win.
Dayne Parker had three hits and an RBI for the Shockers, while Casey Gillaspie had two hits, two RBI and a home run.
Starter Kris Gardner took the loss. He went five innings and gave up five runs on seven hits.
The Broncs jumped on the board with two runs in the second inning. After a leadoff walk and single, Kris Gardner retired the next two batters, but Shane Klemcke doubled to left-center to give UTPA a 2-0 lead.
Erik Harbutz was hit by a pitch with one out in the second and advanced to second on a groundout. He scored on an RBI single from Dayne Parker to cut the lead to 2-1.
UTPA added another run in the fifth after a leadoff double and one-out single to increase the lead to 3-1 and three solo home runs in the sixth made the score 6-1.
Casey Gillaspie's solo home run in the sixth cut the lead to 6-2 and RBI singles for Taylor Doggett and Gillaspie made the score 6-4.
The Shockers tacked on an unearned run in the eighth, but UTPA got it back in the ninth for the final 7-5 score.
The Shockers and Broncs play game two of the series at 2 p.m. on Sat., March 9.
