HONOLULU, Hawaii – Johnny Coy went 4-for-4 with three RBI to lead Wichita State to a 6-2 win over Hawaii.

Starter Cale Elam went eight strong innings to earn the win. He allowed just two runs on four hits.

Casey Gillaspie’s seventh home run of the season gave the Shocks an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Rainbows wasted no time taking the lead in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff walk to Stephen Ventimilia, a hit and run single from Pi’ikea Kitamura put runners on the corners with no outs. A groundout scored Ventimilia to tie the score at one and an RBI single from Conner George put UH up 2-1.

Erik Harbutz and Micah Green led off the second inning with singles and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from Tyler Baker. Parker Zimmerman was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Daniel Kihle was hit by a pitch to bring home Harbutz to tie the score at two.

The Shockers used doubles from Johnny Coy and Harbutz to take a 3-2 lead in the third inning and increased the lead in the sixth. Zimmerman led off with a double and after a walk to Kihle, Garrett Bayliff bunted them over.  UH intentionally walked Gillaspie to load the bases and Coy hit a single through the left side to score Zimmerman and Kihle to give the Shocks a 5-2 lead.

WSU tacked on another run in the eighth. Bayliff led off with a single and advanced to second and third on a couple of wild pitches. He scored on a single from Coy for a 6-2 lead.

The Shockers and Rainbows play game four of the series on Sat., March 23 at 11:35 p.m. Central time.
