LAWRENCE, Kan. – Dakota Smith’s RBI single in the 11th inning drove home the only run scored in the game as Wichita State fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 1-0 at Hoglund Ballpark on Tuesday night. Both teams had great opportunities to put a run on the scoreboard throughout the game but timely hits were scarce as the Shockers and Jayhawks combined for a total of nine hits through the first nine innings of play.

Kansas’ best opportunity came in the fifth inning when Ka’iana Eldridge blasted a deep fly ball to left field that was originally called a grand slam homerun but after the umpires came together and discussed the ruling on the field, the homerun call was changed to a foul ball and reliever Albert Minnis got Eldridge to fly out to center field on the next pitch to end the wild inning.

In the eighth inning, Johnny Coy led off with a single to right field and Tanner Kirk was hit by a pitch to give Wichita State runners on first and second with nobody out. Taylor Doggett’s ground out advanced pinch runner Mikel Mucha and Kirk to second and third but Tanner Dearman lined out into a double play to end the inning tied at 0-0.

In the 11th inning, The Jayhawks scored the winning run on Smith’s RBI single that scored Michael Suiter to give the Jayhawks the 1-0 victory. Suiter led off the inning with a single to center field, Alex DeLeon was hit by a pitch, and Jordan Dreiling singled on a bunt to load the bases before Smith drove in the winning run.

Wichita State will return home to Eck Stadium tomorrow, May 1, for a nine inning game against Kansas Wesleyan at 6:30 p.m.
