BSB: Shocks Begin 2014 Season With 6-1 Win

WICHITA, Kan. – The 34th ranked Wichita State baseball team won their season opener 6-1 against SIU-Edwardsville on Friday at Eck Stadium. This was the Shockers’ first of a three-game series against the Cougars and their first game of the 2014 season.

Aaron LaBrie picked up the win for the Shockers. He pitched three innings and gave up just three hits while striking out three Cougars.

Zach Malach took the loss for SIU-Edwardsville. He pitched one and a third innings and gave up four runs on five hits, including two hit batsmen.

No. 34 Wichita State had ten hits while SIU-Edwardsville had seven of their own.  Garrett Bayliff went 1-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Casey Gillaspie went 2-5 with two RBI. The Shockers also had two errors.

SIU-Edwardsville scored in the top of the first inning. Skyler Geissinger was hit by a pitch with two outs in the inning after Chase Green was caught stealing. Devin Caldwell hit a RBI double while Geissinger scored the first run of the game from first base to put SIU-Edwardsville up 1-0.

The Shockers tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning after being shutout for the first five and a third innings. Bayliff started the rally by earning a walk with one out. Gillaspie singled to right field, allowing Bayliff to advance to second. Chase Simpson then singled up the middle to score Bayliff.

No. 34 Wichita State would score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Bayliff was hit by a Zach Malach 1-2 fastball to give the Shockers a 2-1 lead. Gillaspie then hit a 2-RBI single off of Malach to extend the Shocker lead to 4-1, scoring Tanner Dearman and Tanner Kirk.

The Shockers scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bayliff hit a two-run double that scored both Dearman and Mikel Mucha, giving WSU their 6-1 lead that ended up being the final score.

The Shockers and Cougars play the second of their three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m at Eck Stadium.
