WICHITA, Kan. – The Shockers used an offensive attack as they scored 21 runs on 24 hits that included a grand slam, a three-run home run, and six doubles to sweep the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars with a 21-2 win on Sunday afternoon. Parker Zimmerman and Micah Green led the offensive attack for the Shockers, combining to go 6-for-9 with six RBI.
Garrett Brummett earned the win, allowing one hit and two strikeouts in four innings pitched.
The Shockers started the scoring early when Chase Simpson singled in the bottom of the first that scored Tanner Dearman. Cody Bobbit came to bat with the bases loaded and his bloop single to left brought home Casey Gillaspie and Simpson to give Wichita State a 3-0 lead.
Wichita State put up eight runs on nine hits, including eight consecutive hits during the second inning.
Gillaspie took a 1-1 pitch from SIU-Edwardsville starter Jarrett Bednar and powered his second home run in as many days over the left field fence for a three-run opposite field home run. Green followed the Gillaspie home run with a single up the middle and came all the way around to score on a Daniel Kihle double to left field. Kihle would score on a RBI single from Cody Bobbit. Wes Phillips continued the scoring frenzy with an RBI single to right that brought home Bobbit. Dearman’s RBI single was the seventh consecutive hit during the second inning as the Shockers built a comfortable 11-0 lead after two innings of play. Wichita State had eight runs on nine hits during the inning.
The Cougars got a run back in the third inning after Austin Verschoore doubled to left and later scored on a Wichita State fielding error.
The Shockers put up eight more runs in the fourth inning to match their output in the second inning. Wichita State scored its eight runs on six hits that included a grand slam from Micah Green.
Bobbit walked to start the fourth inning for Wichita State and scored from first on a Parker Zimmerman double down the left field line. After a Cougar pitching change, Gillaspie singled to right that scored Zimmerman and Simpson drew a bases loaded walk that brought home Joe Haddox from third for a 14-1 lead.
The highlight of the fourth inning came from the bat of Green. Green blasted a grand slam over the left field fence that smacked the scoreboard in the process. Green increased the Shocker lead to 18-1 after his trot around the bases and Zimmerman doubled for the second time in the inning to bring home Bobbit for a 19-1 Wichita State lead after four complete innings of play.
Bayliff’s single in the fifth allowed the 20th Shocker to cross home plate after Haddox scored from second. Kihle’s infield single scored Gillaspie for a 21-1 lead after five innings.
Wichita State is next in action on Tuesday, Feb. 18 when they host Central Arkansas. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
