MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Wichita State improved to 6-2 on the year with a 10-0 win over Coastal Carolina at the Baseball at the Beach tournament.
Starter Cale Elam earned the win and went 6.1 shutout innings and allowed just three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Casey Gillaspie went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run, while Daniel Kihle went 2-for-5.
The Shockers jumped on the board in the top of the third. Tanner Kirk led off with a double to right field and with one out moved to third on a wild pitch. Tanner Dearman singled through the right side to drive in Kirk and give the Shockers a 1-0 lead.
Casey Gillaspie singled to lead off the fourth and went to third on a single up the middle from Chase Simpson. Gillaspie scored on a ground out from Tyler Baker to increase the lead to 2-0.
WSU added two more runs in the fifth without a base hit. Kirk led off with a walk and Cody Bobbit reached on a fielding error on his sacrifice bunt. Tanner Dearman reached on another error on a sacrifice bunt which scored Kirk and Bobbit ended up scoring on a bases loaded walk to Simpson to give the Shocks a 4-0 lead.
Garrett Bayliff and Micah Green both singled to lead off the sixth and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from Kirk. Bayliff scored on a ground out from Bobbit to put WSU up 5-0.
The Shockers added on five more in the eighth highlighted by a three-run home run by Gillaspie that made the score 10-0.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Feb. 28 when they host Long Beach State at Eck Stadium at 3 p.m.
