WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State defeated Long Beach State 5-4 during the first game of a doubleheader on Friday inside Eck Stadium. The Shockers move to 7-2 on the year while the Dirtbags fall to 7-6.
Foster Vielock earned his first win of the season by allowing just two hits while pitching one and two-thirds innings. Ty Provencher of Long Beach State took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year.
A.J. Ladwig was the starting pitcher for the Shockers. He went seven innings and gave up just one run on five hits, striking out two and walking two batsmen.
Daniel Kihle of Wichita State went 3-5 while hitting a solo home run and had two RBI. Ino Patron went 2-4 with a double and two RBI for Long Beach State.
The Shockers began the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Casey Gillaspie hit a 2-RBI double which scored both Daniel Kihle and Tanner Dearman.
Long Beach State didn’t score their first run of the game until the top of the sixth inning, cutting the Shocker lead in half. With the bases loaded, Patron singled to second base, scoring Zach Domingues. Right after Domingues scored, Michael Hill was thrown out at home attempting to tie the game.
Wichita State regained a two-run lead in the bottom of the sixth when Micah Green hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Tyler Baker. This gave WSU a 3-1 advantage.
Kihle extended the Shocker lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to left, his second home run of the season.
The Dirtbags scored three in the eighth to tie the game at four apiece. Garrett Hampson singled to center, scoring Coleman Vaughn. Hill then knocked in Domingues from a fielder’s choice to first, cutting the Shocker lead down to 4-3. Patron later doubled to right, scoring Hampson and tying the game.
Kihle knocked in Tanner Kirk from second base to give Wichita State the 5-4 win with one out during the bottom of the ninth.
Game two of Wichita State’s doubleheader against Long Beach State will begin at 4:35 p.m.
