WICHITA, Kan. – Dayne Parker and Casey Gillaspie homered and Erik Harbutz had two RBI as Wichita State opened up the last home stand of the season with an 8-5 win over the Dallas Baptist Patriots on Friday night. Cale Elam earned the win for Wichita State going 7 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.
The Shockers took an early four run lead in the second inning. Parker took the first pitch he saw deep over the left field wall in the second inning for a three-run homerun to give Wichita State a 3-0 lead. Chase Simpson led off the inning with a single up the middle and Tyler Baker followed with another single before Parker blasted his third homer of the season. Micah Green was then hit by a pitch and stole second on the next pitch, before Harbutz’s RBI single that scored Green from second gave the Shockers a 4-0 lead after two innings.
Dallas Baptist cut into the Wichita State lead with a single run in the third inning when Mike Wesolowski homered over the left field wall for the Patriots’ first run of the game.
Patriots’ Justin Wall tripled in the fourth inning with one out and scored on a RBI single from RJ Talamantes to get Dallas Baptist within 4-2. The Patriots’ threatened again in the inning with Talamantes in scoring position, but Elam was able to get back-to-back Patriot batters to groundout to end the top half of the inning.
Wichita State began the fourth by playing small ball. Parker and Zair Koeiman walked to start the inning and Micah Green laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Parker and Koeiman into scoring position. Harbutz, a senior playing in his last home series, slapped an infield single to short that scored Parker for his second RBI of the game and gave Wichita State a 5-2 lead. Daniel Kihle followed with a double down the left field line that scored Koeiman and Harbutz moved over to third on the hit. Garrett Bayliff’s sacrifice fly allowed Harbutz to tag up and score from third as Wichita State broke the game open with a three run inning for a 7-2 advantage after four innings.
Gillaspie blasted his MVC leading 14th homerun of the season in the seventh inning to add on to the Wichita State lead. Gillaspie’s solo homerun increased the lead to 8-2 in favor of the Shockers after seven complete innings.
Austin Listi’s two-run homerun in the eighth inning for Dallas Baptist cut the Shocker lead to 8-4. Listi took an Elam pitch over the center field wall that ended Elam’s night. Elam’s pitching line read, 7 1/3 innings pitched, five strikeouts, and four earned runs.
