BSB: Shocks Beat SIU 2-1 in 12 Innings

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Wichita State used an RBI fielder’s choice from Chase Simpson in the top of the 12th to defeat Southern Illinois 2-1 in 12 innings in an elimination game at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Starter Sam Tewes went six innings and gave up one run on one hit with four walks and three strikeouts. Reliever Foster Vielock earned the win with 4.1 shutout innings. Three Shocker pitchers combined to one-hit SIU.

Casey Gillaspie went 2-for-5 for the Shockers, while Dayne Parker and Daniel Kihle each had a hit.

The Shockers used some help from the Salukis to get on the board in the top of the fourth. With one out, Daniel Kihle singled to centerfield and the ball got past SIU centerfielder Dyllin Mucha and Kihle came all the way around to score to put the Shocks up 1-0.

The Salukis answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Jake Welch led off the inning with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Cody Daily to tie the score at one.

With one out in the top of the 12th, Parker singled to left-center and moved to third on a single to right field by Gillaspie. Parker scored on Chase Simpson’s RBI fielder’s choice to give the Shocks a 2-1 lead.

The Shockers next play Illinois State at approximately 4:37 p.m. (Central) today.
