WICHITA, Kan.- Derek Schermerhorn and Conor Gillaspie each had a solo home run in the fourth inning to power Wichita State to a 3-0 win over the Nittany Lions Saturday afternoon.
Wichita State starter Travis Banwart threw seven shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out nine. Senior Noah Booth closed the door, throwing four strike outs in two innings.
The scoreboard was blanked until the bottom of the fourth when Schermerhorn shot his homerun off the scoreboard in left field. Gillaspie also sent his to left for an opposite-field homerun, giving the Shockers a 2-0 lead.
The Shockers scratched out one more in the sixth with a lead-off double from Matt Brown. Gillaspie singled to shallow left field and Brown sped home on the hit. The bases were loaded with a Danny Jackson single, his third of the day, and a walk to Blake Hurlbutt, but Penn State starter Craig Clark toughened up and sat down the next three Shocker batters on strike outs.
Brown went 3-for-4 with a run and Jackson went 3-for-3 at the plate. Schermerhorn and Gillaspie each had singles tacked onto their homeruns and Gillaspie ended with two RBI.
Wichita State wraps up the series with Penn State tomorrow afternoon, Sunday at 1 p.m.
